Whiteboarding Design - Thinking Aloud

May 26, 2026

You're 20 minutes into your design interview when the interviewer says, "Let's move to the whiteboard and redesign the Ola booking flow together."

What Actually Happens

Unlike portfolio presentations where you control the narrative, whiteboarding design interviews are live problem-solving sessions. The interviewer isn't looking for pixel-perfect sketches — they want to see your thinking process unfold in real-time. You'll be standing at a whiteboard, marker in hand, talking through every decision while drawing rough wireframes. Most companies in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR include this in their design interview process, especially for product design roles at startups and tech companies.

What to Say and Do

Start by clarifying the problem: "Before I begin sketching, can I take 2 minutes to understand the user context and constraints?" Draw a simple user journey first — boxes and arrows showing the current flow. Say your thoughts aloud: "I'm placing the pickup location field at the top because users need to confirm where they are first." Use phrases like "My hypothesis is..." and "Based on user behavior patterns..." to sound analytical. When stuck, say "Let me think through the trade-offs here" instead of freezing silently.

The Common Mistake

Most junior designers immediately start drawing detailed UI elements without understanding the problem space. They sketch in silence, treating it like an art exercise rather than a collaborative discussion. This makes interviewers question your communication skills and strategic thinking — both crucial for working in cross-functional teams.

Key Vocabulary

• Information Architecture (IA): How you organize and structure the interface • User flow: The path users take to complete a task • Edge cases: Unusual scenarios your design must handle • Trade-offs: Explaining why you chose one solution over another

Practice on ProMode

Set up a mock whiteboarding session where you redesign the Swiggy restaurant selection flow while explaining every decision aloud. Practice this conversation on ProMode with AI voice calls until it feels natural.
